As for John's bass play on "A Kind Of Magic", my friend Andrew told me how it works. (Thanks for your help, Andrew!)
With regards to the bassline of "A Kind Of Magic". The bass lines are fairly simple for this song, yet seem to pound out a groovy rhythm. The particular riff that John uses, was quite popular during the 1980's.
You can hear it best on the "Live at Wembley 1986" CD, when everything drops out, and all you can hear is Roger tapping a simple 4/4 beat, and John playing something like this on the bass:

This bass line was used a lot in the 1980's. It was very popular for some
reason. It's simple, and has a catchy swing to it.
