Deacon, 57, now enjoys life far away from the music business, according to one of his Queen bandmates. The bass guitarist and songwriter was not involved in recording The Cosmos Rocks, the album released last year, and has not been involved with the consequent tour. Deacon joined Queen in 1971 and last played with them in 1997. The death of lead singer Freddie Mercury in 1991 boosted interest in the band and the Mercury effect has not ended. Since 2001 Queen Productions, the bandfs main company, has paid 33m to the members. Our rock expert reckons that the Queen brand generates profits close to 10m in a good year. Deaconfs company, Goldfinch Productions, has had nearly 4m in dividends over three years. The stage show We Will Rock You also continues to be a moneyspinner but Deaconfs lack of activity leads our rock expert to clip him back this year.
